Autumn Term Rehearsals - Update on Rehearsals Page The concert started with the infectious rhythms of Dvorak's Slavonic Dances – we played a selection of five, contrasting fast and furious with more reflective melodies. The acoustics at The Old Gym really came into their own, especially in the spinechilling opening to Montagues and Capulets where the discordant and dramatic brass and perscussion suddenly stop to reveal the still and muted string chord – as Robert said, summing up the whole tragic story in the first few bars. Andrew has conducted both works before and has made a particular study of the Mahler but it is nonetheless a big ask to switch at such a late stage - however, he took on the challenge and inspired the orchestra to really understand his vision of the music. In another orchestra first, Ed gave an informal open workshop earlier in the day, describing the history of the instrument, how he started playing, and the music which is written for it – a fascinating opportunity to learn and ask questions, and much enjoyed by everyone who came.
